Housing for Older People

Clúid has been developing sheltered housing since the 1990s and now has just under 500 tenants living in sheltered housing complexes around the country. Sheltered housing by Clúid is high quality, purpose built accommodation for independent living.

Depending on the location and design of the scheme, the housing may consist of own-door bungalows or of apartments. Communal facilities such as laundries, lounges, activity rooms, IT suites or similar are also provided.

Each of these complexes has an on-site or visiting Scheme Manager or Warden whose role it is to maximise the comfort and security of residents. They also facilitate a range of social activities and support services to enhance the independence of the residents.

Clúid’s objectives in relation to housing for older people are:

  • To enable older persons to live independently with privacy, dignity and fulfilment, for as long as they wish and are able to;
  • To tailor services to the actual needs of tenants and to avoid stereotypes of old age;
  • To foster links with the wider community;
  • To provide a non-discriminatory service and to respect diversity;
  • To actively encourage residents to get involved in activities in their schemes;
  • To support the successful return of elderly emigrants.

Early in 2007 Clúid published the ‘Sheltered Housing: Scheme Managers’ Manual’, a comprehensive guide to day-to-day management of high quality sheltered housing. It is Clúid’s hope that the manual will contribute to improving management practices in sheltered and supported housing country-wide. Click here to download the Manual (PDF Docoment, 3.5MB).

Clúid is committed to responding to the changing needs and aspirations of older people in Ireland. We would like to see sheltered housing available as a first choice for older people. Clúid aims to achieve the right balance of promoting independence and self reliance whilst also offering support and security.

In some areas Clúid also offers sheltered housing as an option for older owner occupiers who need to move to more suitable accommodation. This is subject to agreement by the local authority.  Find out more about the Financial Contribution Scheme here (PDF Document, 806Kb).
