Taoiseach and Housing Minister open social housing in Ladyswell, Dublin 15

Clúid Housing today welcomed the Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD, and Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Howard Mahony, to the official opening of the new development of 65 social houses in Ladyswell, Mulhuddart, Dublin 15.

The development, a mix of 43, two-, three- and four-bedroom houses and 22 one-and two-bed apartments, provides high-quality, long-term homes for households on Fingal County Council’s housing list.

The new estate includes 22 dedicated age-friendly homes which will be managed by Clann, Clúid’s service for older people. Clann is committed to providing age-friendly, independent housing and services for people over the age of 55 in housing need, all over Ireland. Clann’s primary goal is to support residents to continue living independently in their own homes and communities for as long as possible.

All houses in this Ladyswell development are dual aspect, with living spaces arranged both to take advantage of orientation and to overlook the street in front. Ground floor apartments have own-door access, and an open space to the rear which adjoins the communal courtyard garden. Upper floor apartments provide private open space in the form of covered balconies. The scheme was designed in a way to form greater connections between the existing green areas and links with the wider community.

The project was the result of a partnership between Clúid, Fingal County Council, the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, and the Housing Finance Agency (HFA).

Taoiseach Micheál Martin commented: “Every day we see Approved Housing Bodies like Clúid deliver high quality homes for people in Ireland. AHBs, in partnership with Government, are committed, as a matter of urgency, to increasing the supply of social and affordable housing. These social units here in Ladyswell provide much needed homes to 65 households on Fingal County Council’s housing list.

Included in this development are homes within Clúid’s age-friendly service Clann, which I think is a brilliant addition to their portfolio. Clann homes enable local people to stay in their communities, to remain independent, but in homes that are suitable to their changing needs.

Ladyswell is a brilliant example of a mixed community of younger people, families and older adults. Congratulations to Clúid, Minister O’Brien and our colleagues in the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage on its successful opening today.”

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD said: “The close working relationships we have with AHBs, such as Clúid, are integral to our delivery of social housing in Ireland. Housing for All outlined the roadmap to achieving the largest ever social housing build programme and recent Budget 2023 announcements have supported that. Whilst delivery of social and affordable housing is undeniably a mammoth task, due to inflation and supply chain challenges, local authorities and not for profit organisations like Clúid and Clann continue to deliver at scale.”

Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Howard Mahony, said: Ladyswell was an important project for us to undertake as we continue to build homes that make it easier to live, work and play in Fingal. We’re extremely proud to have been able to work with Clúid Housing on this development – these are high quality properties made available on Council land in the heart of Dublin 15 and which are readily accessible to a number of key community facilities in the area. Demand for housing remains high here in Fingal, and it is thanks to collaborative partnerships like this which go some way to helping us achieve our ambition to deliver a large mix of social housing to different groups right across the County.”

Eibhlin O’Connor, Head of New Business, stated: “We’re delighted to officially open this much-anticipated development. Clúid Housing’s vision is ‘a society where everyone has a great place to live’. We believe that social and affordable housing is best provided for in mixed tenure schemes that provide choice to a wider range of people at different stages of their lives. And this development provides both general needs and age-friendly homes for 65 families on the Fingal County Council housing list.

Clann, our age friendly service is on track to deliver approximately 100 new age-friendly homes in 2022 for people over 55 across counties Laois, Galway, Dublin and Limerick. Delivering mixed tenures such as these play a vital role in delivering the ambitious targets outlined in Housing for All, the government’s housing plan for Ireland. We worked closely with Fingal County Council on this scheme, and we’re delighted to house families who are in need of social housing supports.”
