Newcastlewest Locals Tackle Social Housing Stigma

Residents of a sheltered housing scheme in Newcastlewest are changing perceptions of social housing.

Aware that social housing can sometimes be viewed negatively, residents of Liosan Court decided to do something about it. Over the past year the residents have worked hand in hand with the local community to change the way people think about social housing.

The scheme, run by Clúid Housing, has been open since 2007. Scheme Manager Collette Lundy commented: “Liosan Court really is a great place to live. The sense of community here is absolutely amazing. When we realised that we were the only ones who knew this we decided it was time to let others in on the secret. Over the past year we’ve really put ourselves out there into the community and the response has been great. We’ve even seen a jump in the number of people wanting to come live here!”

Central to changing the public’s perception of Liosan Court was a photo documentary project that has just been installed in the entrance hall. The mural includes images of residents in their own apartments, on day trips and at events. Resident Paul Bolton said “We’re a very strong community here. Look up on that wall and you can see it all for yourself – day trips, tea mornings, a walking club.” The project was funded through community fundraising and a Clúid Housing donation.

Recent updates to the scheme include new flooring, blinds, a mobility door for the community room, enhanced security and a defibrillator. The residents themselves have been working on enhancing the communal gardens and next up is a fundraiser to build a raised vegetable garden.

95% of people living in Liosan Court live alone. Sheltered housing schemes like this aim to provide opportunities for older people to meet up and develop new friendships through different social activities. This helps older people to maintain their independence, be in a secure environment and participate in the local community.
